"Art Keeps man awake"

....... Presentation:

... Hamid BOUHIOUI, born in Casablanca on June 4th 1963.
Self-taught artist
Ph.D. in Acoustics (Compiègne France)
Double citizenship: Moroccan and Canadian
Both Artist and university professor

...Painting has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I am a self-taught Canadian artist born and grown up in Casablanca, the famous seaside city of Morocco. There, I used to play soccer and swim from March to October every year.
I work mainly with acrylic on canvas, using thin brushed layers of paint, building it up slowly to create glazes of luminosity and colourful contrasts which reveal the transition between the concepts built up in my mind and the visual result that gives me a feeling of peace. I travelled a lot and discovered the common humanity in peoples from Hawaii to Paris and from Berlin to Hong-Kong. I believe in unconditional love for humans of all kinds, all colours, and all beliefs.
I am also a university professor.

What they say about Bouhioui’s work…

“… Walking into the gallery is to be dazzled by the brightness of the ten pictures that make up this world of sunshine and relaxed, happy, tradition. Each picture is well-placed in its cultural framework, by a bilingual notice.
That yellow on yellow is the real entrance to a real imperial palace. The mysterious staircase between white houses in Rabat is the lane that leads to a view from a cliff.
Hamid has been there. The brightly dressed leather workers have a traditional stance. The Sicilian lady is wearing an Arab veil -- "I wanted people to see how strong the five centuries of Arab influence were, in Sicily," said Hamid. The guard is snoozing in front of the palace; the figures in their bright colours seem to breathe.…”
Nigel Barbour, Newspaper ‘The Source’, March 6th 2002, Vancouver Canada

“…I was marvellously surprised this afternoon after visiting the expo when I noticed the influence of your heritage on your work and the exulting portrayal of traditional women”. “…Your paintings have salient political colourings and tellingly portray a country oscillation between tradition and modernity…”
H. Barakat, Vancouver Canada

DUALITY

...At this time, my focus is on DUALITY: Love versus Hatred, Peace versus War, Tolerance versus Stupidity, Beliefs versus Creativity etc. I believe that Duality is everywhere. Duality is everything. I have been exploring this for several years. Almost all my artistic research is about Duality. I don't paint for the sake of it. I do it to express by shapes and colours what I can't express by words or by any other means. To me, painting is not only about technique, techniques can be learned. There's always something to see, to analyse, and a message to synthesise from my paintings. The way an artist expresses himself is something unique. Technique is not."
